Private Child ADHD Assessment – Glasgow

Private ADHD Assessments for Children & Adolescents in Glasgow

Diverse Diagnostics is a specialist clinic offering a comprehensive online private child ADHD assessment in Glasgow and other areas in Scotland.

An ADHD diagnosis is not a dire life sentence. On the contrary, an early diagnosis can empower children and young people by helping them understand their mental health and giving them the tools they need to manage their symptoms and thrive at school and in day to day life.

As parents, you may have noticed certain behaviours in your child that could be associated with ADHD, but you aren’t sure. Diverse Diagnostics is here to help. Read more about our private child ADHD diagnosis in Scotland below, or get in touch with us to arrange a free 15-minute consultation with a consultant psychiatrist.

We understand that many patients may tend to mask a lot of their symptoms and this may fall just below diagnostic criteria. By using our Enhanced ADHD Assessment, we administer the QB Check which is an objective, scientific and evidence-based assessment tool which doesn’t rely on the opinions and statements of others to assess for ADHD which standard ADHD assessments do. Click here to find out more about our Enhanced ADHD Assessments.

There is no waiting list for ADHD testing at our private clinic and we offer a free 15 minute consultation.

What is ADHD in Children?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects people’s behaviour. It falls under the category of neurodevelopmental conditions, which means it affects the neurological system and how the brain functions.

While research around the exact cause of ADHD is inconclusive, there tends to be a higher risk of ADHD if a parent or family member has it too.

ADHD is, unfortunately, one of the most misunderstood conditions because most people do not understand the intricacies beyond attention deficit, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Many parents and teachers think the child is purposefully being difficult, while many young people with undiagnosed ADHD feel frustrated with themselves for not being able to concentrate and meet the expectations of their parents and teachers.

This is why understanding the symptoms and behaviour is so important.

ADHD in Children

ADHD Symptoms in Childhood & Teen Years

ADHD symptoms and signs generally include three components: attention deficit, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. However, this will vary among children, and not every patient will be affected by all three. Some children can have combined symptoms, and some may not.

Other mental health problems such as learning, mood, and sleep disorders can also accompany ADHD. These are known as ADHD comorbidities.

Symptoms of ADHD in children will present fairly early in a child’s development — usually before the age of 12. Some of these include:

  • Lacks attention to detail or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork or activities

  • Difficulties with listening, concentration, focus, or sustaining attention in tasks or play activities

  • Avoids or dislikes tasks that require sustained mental effort (like schoolwork, studying, or homework) and fails to follow through on instructions or finish tasks

  • Loses items that are necessary for tasks or activities (school assignments, pencils, books, toys, etc.)

  • Easily distracted, even by unrelated stimuli

  • Fidgeting with hands or feet, or squirming in seat

  • Often leaves seat in the classroom or runs and climbs excessively in situations where it would be inappropriate (presenting as restless feelings for a teen)

  • Blurts out answers before questions have been completed

  • Difficulty with self-control and waiting their turn

Adolescents with ADHD will most likely have displayed some of the above behaviours during childhood. However, as their academic demands and need for independence increase, feelings of failure and frustration can also increase. This can have a significant psychological impact by affecting their self-esteem, mental health, and future educational and professional aspirations.

Common Misconceptions Around ADHD Symptoms & Diagnoses

While the above list of symptoms is not a complete list and a diagnosis requires more than ticking boxes or completing an online quiz, it is easy to see how certain behaviours are confused with kids just being kids. For example, when a child is constantly on-the-go, most parents think they just have a lot of energy.

Symptoms of ADHD in children can also often be confused with dyslexia, behavioural issues, mood disorders, or even conduct disorders. Therefore, the correct ADHD diagnosis & assessment are vital. This requires the reporting of symptoms within different environments, such as school, home, and at the medical examination.

There is research that shows boys are more frequently diagnosed with ADHD than girls, but this could simply be because those who show hyperactive-impulsivity behaviours are more quickly noticed by caretakers than those who have inattentive symptoms. Boys typically show more externalised symptoms such as impulsivity and running, while girls tend to show more internalised symptoms such as inattentiveness and low self esteem.

If you’ve noticed many of these symptoms and behaviours in your child or teen, a private ADHD child assessment could give your family the answers you need.

The Importance of an ADHD Diagnosis & Treatment Plan

When ADHD is not treated, there are a number of risks that can develop. These include:

For this reason, an ADHD diagnosis can be life changing for a child or teen. The proper diagnosis, ADHD assessment, and GP/consultant report will help the child and the family to take action and improve the patient’s quality of life.

Not only will the child have a better understanding of themselves, but they will be able to optimise their learning experience and embrace their neurodiversity going forward.

A comprehensive assessment and diagnosis of ADHD from Diverse Diagnostics will help a young person get the appropriate support with the possibility of medical treatment. Medication & Treatment Plan

An ADHD assessment & treatment plan go hand in hand. Treating ADHD symptoms in children is essential for ensuring they live happy and productive lives.

Our treatment options include general advice after the child is assessed, prescriptions under Shared Care, private ADHD therapy sessions with a therapist for ongoing support, and 6-week parenting programmes to help parents understand neurodiversity. We can also advise you on other options for ADHD support in Scotland, such as support groups.

Shared Care with your GP

When medical treatment is required, we provide prescriptions only under Shared Care with your General Physician (GP). This means that your GP will need to agree prior to the initial medication appointment to provide NHS prescriptions.

If the patient needs medical treatment, a referral letter will be written to their GP (public or private) asking for Shared Care. Because many ADHD medications need a physical examination before they can be prescribed, blood pressure, height, weight, and heart rate measurements will be taken and recorded in the clinical notes at Diverse Diagnostics.

All medication reviews will be under the consultant at Diverse Diagnostics, who will be responsible for the prescription and dosage specifications.

Private prescriptions will be available from the 4th of January of 2023.
