Understanding Child ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common condition that affects millions of children worldwide. While often perceived as a childhood issue, undiagnosed ADHD can persist into adulthood. The prevalence of ADHD is 1 in 30, or 3.5% for children living in the Republic of Ireland. With proper diagnosis and support, children with ADHD can thrive in school, at home, and in all aspects of life. A common misconception is that in order to be diagnosed with ADHD, you must be hyperactive. This is not true. ADHD presents in three main subtypes: inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, and combined.

Signs and Symptoms of Childhood ADHD:

  • Inattention: Easily distracted, daydreams frequently, forgets instructions, loses belongings often.
  • Hyperactivity: Fidgets excessively, has trouble sitting still, talks nonstop, runs or climbs inappropriately.
  • Impulsivity: Blurts out answers, acts without thinking, difficulty taking turns, struggles with waiting.

It's important to note that these symptoms can also be caused by other factors which are teased out with a thorough mental state. A comprehensive evaluation by a qualified professional is necessary for an accurate ADHD diagnosis

Children with ADHD might also have:

  • Learning Disorders: Difficulties with reading, writing, or maths can co-occur with ADHD [Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia].
  • Sleep Disorders: Trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or restless sleep can be linked to ADHD.
  • Anxiety Disorders: Children with ADHD may experience higher levels of anxiety and worry.
  • Mood Disorders: Depression or mood swings can sometimes accompany ADHD.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD): Some children with ADHD may also exhibit social and communication challenges characteristic of ASD.

These conditions are screened for in all our standard assessments ensuring a comprehensive assessment of a child’s mental state.

How Can Childhood ADHD Impact Your Child?

Undiagnosed and untreated ADHD can significantly impact your child's well-being, affecting various aspects of their life. It can depend on the influence of the environment they are in, how they were raised and what age they were diagnosed with ADHD at.

It can impact their:

  • Academic Performance: Difficulty focusing, completing assignments, and staying organised can lead to academic struggles. This can lead to school exclusion.
  • Social Development: Impulsivity and hyperactivity can make it challenging for children to build and maintain friendships. There is an increased risk of conduct disorder.
  • Self-Esteem: Ongoing challenges can lead to feelings of frustration, low self-esteem, and behavioural problems.
  • Mental Health: Children with ADHD are more prone to anxiety and depression.
  • Undiagnosed ADHD: May increase the risk of future substance use or participation in negative behaviors.

Our Child ADHD Assessment Process

Get the clarity and support your child needs, faster.

At Diverse Diagnostics, we understand the importance of a timely and accurate ADHD diagnosis. Our streamlined assessment process, led by experienced Consultant Psychiatrists, mirrors the HSE approach while offering additional benefits:

  1. QB Check (€350): The first appointment is a QB Test, which is a computer-based objective measure of ADHD traits and symptoms.
  2. Appointment 1 (€550):
    • Initial Consultation: Meet with a child and adolescent psychiatrist who will discuss your child's concerns, gather information, and establish a rapport. A mental health screening will also be conducted to ensure a comprehensive evaluation.
    • Detailed Developmental History: Our psychiatrist will delve into your child's developmental journey, gaining a holistic perspective that informs the overall assessment.
    • Formal ADHD Screening: You will complete standardized ADHD screening questionnaires, and we'll gather relevant school reports from your child's teachers.
  3. Appointment 2 (€550):
    • Clear Diagnostic Feedback and Diagnosis: Receive a comprehensive report outlining the assessment findings and diagnosis. A follow-up session with your child's psychiatrist allows for in-depth discussion of the results, addressing any questions or concerns you may have. We will then develop a tailored treatment plan specifically designed to meet your child's unique needs.
